Week 4

Monday was a slow day at the Help Desk. First we went to take the computers off from the theater because the theater needed to be used during the week. However, when we got there, we found out that maintenance had already moved the computers along with the tables. Therefore we came back to the help desk and did not know what else to do. Faith called Joe to see if he had anything for me to do, but he had nothing. So Faith sent me out to place more of the orange cards on printers in the labs. By the time I got back it was already 10 A.M. They had nothing else for me to do, so they let me out early. Maybe Tuesday won’t be so slow.

On Wednesday I only got the chance to work with Ryan and Scott because Faith was out sick. We headed over to Loyola, Room 3, because the computers were not connected to the network. As soon as we went in, we checked every computer to see if any was connected at all. We did this by pressing the control, alt, and delete buttons and at the bottom we looked to see if there was anything that mentioned Academia. We found however that none of the computers were connected. We then went to each computer and right-clicked on My Computer, then pressed on the Computer Name tab, then clicked on the Change button, went to Domain, and typed in the domain. After pressing the OK button, they had to put in their username and password to allow them to do this. The computer would restart and then it would be connected. We logged in with the administrator log in and made sure that all the updates were downloaded and then restarted the computers once again. Ryan then logged on the computer at the front of the classroom and then connected remotely to the main computer where it showed every computer in the school, and showed whether the computers were connected to the network or not. In the list, we found the computers for the classroom that we were in and saw that all of the computers were connected to the network but one. Scott restarted to see if it just needed to be restarted again, and after a few minutes, it showed that it was connected. We headed back to the Help Desk and they were looking to see what else they could show me, but there was nothing else. I did get to ask them about websites while we were out, and they told me that they do use websites a lot to help them out with things they do not understand, or is the first time they come across something. They explained to me that being in the help desk you rely a lot on your peers as well as this websites. They also mentioned that when they get a computer and they just do not know what is wrong with it, they have to play around to figure out what is wrong and what causes the computer to be the way it is. They did not show me any websites when we got back because we forgot, and then by the time I left it was 10:30 in the morning.

I got sick Thursday night, and since I didn’t have medicines, I woke up really sick on Friday morning. I called the Help Desk and told them I would not be going. Ryan answered the phone and told me that it was fine because they had a meeting to go to anyway. I hope I feel better soon.

Ruth, did you ask why why all the pc's in the lab might have lost their connection to the network? Often in internships you can learn more than what was done to fix a problem, if you ask questions like this. This was a good problem to observe.
