Week 3

Monday

On Monday, I mainly worked with Ryan. We headed to the Bruder Center where we had to set up a network printer. They had gotten a Canon printer and where unable neither their old laser printer nor the Canon printer that they now had because they had taken the network cable from the Laser computer to be used with the Canon printer. Ryan then showed me how to get the IP for a laser printer, which was pretty simple. He did not show me how to do it from the Canon printer because it would not give it to him last time he tried, and because he had already gotten it sometime before. Therefore, we went to one of the computers and started to install a new printer, which he showed me how to do. During the process however, we could not find the type of Canon that we were looking for. Fortunately, Ryan had a flash drive where there was information for the type of printer that we wanted, so we chose have a disk, and then got it from there. Then, the driver was installed from a file on the network where they had all the drivers for all types of printers found in Immaculata. When we finished, we printed a test page to make sure that it worked. After we finished with this first computer, Ryan let me set up the second computer with his help, and from then on he let me do the rest of the computers. We had to add the printer to six computers, so that took a while. By the time we got back, it was time for me to leave.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, I went around with Scott placing the orange tags for the printers again. When we came back around half an hour later, Faith had something else for me. She had six laptops lined up on the table to ghost an image to them. She showed me how to ghost an image into one of the laptops, and then left the other computers for me to do. She explained to me that we were ghosting these computers to get them ready to be used for the Art Show. After they had been ghosted, we made sure that the computers were updated. When I came back from the internship later that day, I looked up exactly what a ghost software was. I found out that it is a program that backs up a hard drive and can even be replicated as an image of it to be placed into another computer. I also did some research on SunGuard Higher Education services, and found out that it is a company that was set in 1983 to provide software and services to colleges and universities, financial services, and public sector organizations. SunGuard’s main office is located in Wayne in Pennsylvania.

Friday

On Friday we had to set up computers and printers in the Faculty Center and in the Theater to get them ready for the Art Show. We set up two laptops in the Faculty Center and a printer. We made sure that everything was working and then we moved on to the Theater where we had to wait for maintenance to come and place the tables and their respective tablecloths. After they were done with that, we moved on to placing the four computers and four printers on each table. We connected everything and started setting them up, however, I could not help them finish because it was 11 already and they also had a meeting to get to. Overall, I spent six hours in the Help Desk, and about 2 hours researching and reading.

I am glad you have had a chance to learn about ghosting both what it is and how to do it. I think that, in almost every internship at the many places we have had students work, they have all had to perform this service. At DuPont Merck we basically had categories of pc types. For example, we had a ghost image for a sales person, or a marketing person, so if a new person joined a group within the company, they got a standard setup for that type of person within the company. This way, people who did the same type of work had the same software and the same set up. You can imagine it saves time by not having to do a custom installation for everyone in an organization..

I suggest that while you at the help desk, as time allows, that you ask the people who work there what websites they use to find tech help for the work they have to do in their job. I will send you a list to get you started via email. Update my list (deleting ones that aren’t useful and add new ones that are recommended to you and that you visited and found useful. Create this list as an html favorites list as part of your academic work for this internship. It should be useful to you in the future and I can have it as an on-going project for students who do these IT internships. Thanks, Mrs M
